Someone offered to buy me a fine watch for my birthday coming up soon and I am having a lot of trouble making up my mind and I was hoping I could get some opinions. Should I get a new wristwatch or a vintage pocketwatch? For example I am considering a new Rolex Sea Dweller Deep Sea, or a 100 year old Vacheron and Constantin gold pocketwatch in mint condition that comes with the original box. I more than likely would not be wearing either watch and they both cost about the same. All I want to know is which one would you get if you were me? Which is the better investment and which one do you think would be the most desirable to own? Answers appreciated!|||Pocket watches overall are less desirable as collectibles than wristwatches. A VC is nice but not in the same league as a Patek. I would never pay 10K for a VC unless it had provenance that it had belonged to someone *very* famous. Also, a pocket watch is more subject to economic vagaries over the long term, it's very possible they will become even less desirable in the future.
The DS is part of a long line of iconic dive watches produced by Rolex which have proved to be extremely interesting to collectors over the years and it has every opportunity to follow in that storied tradition.
Having said all that, if you get the Rolex, wear it!|||Well, for the authentic watches, i should say it is hard to say.
After carefull consideration. If I were you, I prefer the old one much better than the new one.
Good luck with your investment.|||Go for the Pocket watch, you said that you're not gonna wear neither of them so the reasonable thing to do is to go with the best investment which is the high end rare vintage watch.
